School Visits

In my presentations I prefer to be casual, relaxed, and to allow plenty of time to interact with the children.  I have been influenced by the Montessori educational philosophy, which encourages lots of questions and independent thinking.  I have found that in the Q&A segments of my presentations, many children have an interest in art and are looking to connect with someone who does this professionally.  I love to encourage this.

My presentations focus on the life and work of an illustrator.  A slide projector is used to show finished work as well as illustrations in progress.   All presentations are age-appropriate.  For older students, the focus is primarily on illustration as a business:  How does an illustrator get started?  What's the picture book industry like?  How much money does an illustrator make?  Length and format vary by grade level.

For Grades 1-6:

In a small group setting (25 students or fewer) presentations are between 15-30 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of Q&A and an art project lasting 20-30 minutes.  A teacher or assistant is needed to help with setup, supervision and cleanup.

For Grades 7-12/Larger Groups

The slide presentation on being an illustrator will last 20-30 minutes, followed by 20-30 minutes of Q&A.

Presentation Needs:

The school must supply watercolors, watercolor paper and brushes for the art project.  The school must also provide a slide projector and microphone for the presentation.

Honorarium:

$300 a day in Texas plus the cost of gas if over 50 miles round trip; $500 day out of state plus travel expenses. I will give up to three one hour presentations in a day.  I ask for 10-15 minute breaks between presentations and 30 minutes for lunch.
